I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you rapidly to fix the leak.

While waiting, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
